Greeley Grindhouse Presents…

The brainOh yes, it’s that time again…Mac Bell is hosting Greeley Grindhouse and presenting “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die”! This horror film was produced in 1962.

Here’s the scoop:

A scientist, Dr. Bill Cortner, (played by Jason Evers) performs medical experiments in his basement laboratory including bringing his fiancé back from the dead after a horrible car accident that decapitates her. Bill’s main area of interest and what he considers his expertise, is transplantation mixed in with a bit of electric shock to restore life to the recently deceased.

When Bill causes a car crash that decapitates his fiancée, Jan Compton, (played by Virginia Leith) he rushes her head off to his laboratory and keeps it alive with an experimental new serum. However, he needs a body for her so he begins searching  the dives, strip clubs, and suburban streets for an attractive woman whose body he can steal to restore Jan. But, Jan isn’t excited about that idea and begins to hate Bill for not allowing her to die. Developing telepathic powers that allow her to communicate with one of Bill’s failed experiments that turned into a monster, she begins to plot her revenge.

Finally, Bill has the perfect candidate for bringing Jan back to her full potential, figure model Doris Powell. However, Bill has quite a surprise in store when he returns to the lab and finds there is a woman scorned waiting for him!

The promotional tagline for The Brain That Wouldn’t Die was “Alive…
without a body…fed by an unspeakable horror from hell!” The film helped provide the inspiration for ’80s horror/comedy director Frank Henenlotter’s Frankenhooker and Basket Case 2.

Have a great week and we’ll see ya there!

Cold Sweat at Greeley Grindhouse

Cold SweatGreeley Gindhouse announces the 1970’s movie “Cold Sweat” with Charles Bronson Thursday night, May 30th at 7:20 PM.

Last month was another great success thanks to everyone who showed up! Mac Bell said, “Fun time at the Greeley Grindhouse. Thanks to friends and family who joined us.”

Cold Sweat  is a 1970 movie based on the 1959 novel “Ride the Nightmare” written by Richard Matheson. The internationally produced movie was filmed around Beaulieu-sur-Mer.

What’s “Cold Sweat” about you ask? An American, Joe Martin, lives in the South of France with his wife, Fabienne, and their daughter. After fighting in the Korean war Joe wants a quieter lifestyle and chooses to rent out boats for a living.

And, of course there is a reason Joe’s wanting to lay low. While an army sergeant he struck his Colonel and was then imprisoned. While there he meets his former company commander, Captain Ross, and a soldier, named Vermont, who served under Joe. Ross and Vermont  had hijacked army vehicles and became involved in  black marketing. Joe, Captain Ross, and Vermont agreed to escape from the military prison. A former Legionnaire called “Katanga  organized the escape, and things go according to plan until a German officer notices their getaway vehicle. Katanga kills the officer. Concerned and disgusted about the murder, Joe escapes in the car by himself leaving his friends and Katanga behind where they are recaptured. His wife and daughter are then kidnapped by drug dealers and Martin must fight back.

A fun fact concerning “Cold Sweat”? The film is known for an extended car chase with an Opel Commodore GS/E I6.

Fight Dirty Part 2

Fight DirtyIt’s Greeley Grindhouse time again! Join the fun on April 25th for “The Street Fighter”. Sonny Chiba, scheduled for February, didn’t show due to kicking butt and cracking his DVD. A reliable source says recovery has gone well, and the  “The Street Fighter” will appear for his scheduled performance.  Classic grindhouse trailers will air before the fighting event begins at 7:20 p.m.

Sonny Chiba is the star of this martial arts flick, and was a pivotal figure in the 70’s explosion of martial arts movies as the lethal “fists for hire”. Unlike Bruce Lee, Sonny Chiba wasn’t a graceful, fluid fighter. However, don’t mistake his butt kicking skills. According to Imbd.com Sonny became the “ferocious machine that mowed down his opponents with his fists and feet, always with a menacing grimace on his face!” This movie is also noted as  the first film to receive an X-rating in the United States solely for violence.

Grab a brew before the fun gets started. Always available drafts include a range from Pabst Blue Ribbon, Guinness, Bud light and Mirror Pond to the rotating beers that include:

  1. Portland Brewing Rose Hip Gold
  2. Widmer Brothers Hopside Down
  3. Fullsail Weizen Bock

The Widmere Brothers Hopside Down is a new beer from Widmer Brothers Rotator IPA Series called Hopside Down India-Style Pale Lager.   This beer is an “aggressively hopped, cold-fermented brew” that brings together the clean crisp finish of a lager with the hoppy aroma & character of an IPA with an  6.7% ABV.

ThanksKilling Anyone?

Greeley Avenue Bar & Grill hosts Greeley Grindhouse movie night on Thursday, November 15th. Join the GA group for heckling and snide remarks as they view “Thankskilling”.

The movie begins at 8:20 pm, or directly after the game, and is hosted by movie mogul, Mac Bell.

This months bad movie choice is “Thankskilling”, and offers 90 minutes of a homicidal turkey axing off college kids during Thanksgiving break. Listed as an “ultimate low-budget experience”,  I”m guessing this horror/comedy film will bring more laughs than screams. The Smack-TV will enhance the experience as people text their comments, poking fun at scenes as they watch the movie. Mac will MC as the texts roll in, and give prizes for the funniest smacks. The prizes are selected according to the theme of the movie. Maybe a rubber turkey will pop up in the prize bag. You won’t want to miss the fun on Smack-TV.
