Summer Days at Greeley Avenue

The warm summer days are drifting by. Most days we have a clear brilliant blue sky with an occasional puff of white floating lazily by. Great camping weather, but I heard, and it’s just rumor of course that the camping grounds are pretty much booked through labor day! So what’s someone to do? Go to Greeley Avenue Bar and Grill, grab a beer and watch some sports!

Did You Know?

It’ Wednesday, which means it’s Hump day and we are that much closer to the weekend. BUT, it also means that Roy Smallwood is hosting Quizzy Trivia tonight! The fun beings at 6:30 p.m so team up and kick some butt with your awesome trivia knowledge.

For those of you that need a bit of assistance in the trivia department, here’s some great beer and alcohol trivia for you.

Bourbon-Barrels

  • The Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock because of beer. They had planned to sail further south to a warm climate, but had run out of beer on the journey
  • Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) was elected in 1932 because of his promise to end Prohibition.
  • In Japan, beer is sold in vending machines, by street vendors and in the train stations.
  • Bourbon is the official alcohol of the United States, by an act of Congress.  Many people have attempted to have that overturned in favor of beer instead throughout the years.
  • American beer is predominately made from rice. That is why it tastes so light compared to foreign beers. This is an American invention to increase profits as they hoped a lighter beer would also draw women to purchase.
  • If you collect beer bottles you are a labeorphilist.
  • The ‘33’ on a bottle of Rolling Rock was originally a printer’s error.  It refers to the 33 words in the original slogan.  It has generated enough mystery over the years that the company left it in the label.
  • The oldest known code of laws is the Code of Hammurabi from ancient Babylonia, about 1750 B.C. It regulated the practices of drinking houses, and called for the death penalty for proprietors found guilty of watering down their beer.
  • In Babylon over 4000 years ago, it was customary for the bride’s father to supply his new son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. As mead is a honey beer and their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the ‘honey month’ – or what we know today as the ‘honeymoon’. In fact, Babylonians believed if the groom drank mead for an entire month, it enhanced the chances of his wife bearing a male heir.

Have a great week and we’ll see ya there!

I’ve got some sports facts for you trivia fans.

  • Because of fears that the Japanese, who had attacked Pearl Harbor less than a month earlier, might attack California, the Rose Bowl game of 1942 between Oregon State and Duke University was moved east to Duke’s hometown in Durham, North Carolina. It didn’t, however, help the home team. Oregon won, 20-16.
  • Racehorses have been known to wear out new shoes in one race.
  • The home team must provide the referee with 36 footballs for each National Football League game.
  • Olympic Badminton rules say that the birdie has to have exactly fourteen feathers.
  • Many Japanese golfers carry “hole-in-one” insurance, because it is traditional in Japan to share one’s good luck by sending gifts to all your friends when you get an “ace.” The price for what the Japanese term an “albatross” can often reach $10,000.
  • Will Clark, professional baseball player, is a direct descendant of William Clark of Lewis and Clark.
  • The 1990 New York Yankee pitching staff set an all-time record with the fewest complete games, three.
  • Rick and Paul Reuschel of the 1975 Chicago Cubs combine to pitch a shutout, the first time brothers do this.
  • At 101, Larry Lewis ran the 100 yard dash in 17.8 seconds setting a new world record for runners 100 years old or older.
  • The silhouette on the Major League Baseball logo is Harmon Killebrew.
  • Superfly Jimmy Snuka was the first E.C.W. World Champ.
  • Honey is used as a center for golf balls and in antifreeze mixtures.

Love Your Trivia? Greeley’s Got Your Quizzies

Hump DayHas everyone seen the Geico commercial with the camel walking around the office asking what day it is? And, what’s the answer? It’s HUMP Day! And what does Hump Day mean at Greeley Sports Bar and Grill? It’s Quizzy time with Roy Smallwood so come on in the games begin at 6:30 p.m

Here are some sports trivia facts to help you win!

  •  In 1969 a brief battle broke out between Honduras and El Salvador. Although tensions had been rough between the two countries, the reason for the war was El Salvador’s victory over Honduras in the World Cup Soccer playoffs. Gunfire was exchanged for about 30 minutes before reason could prevail.
  • Horse racing is one of the most dangerous sports. Between 2 and 3 jockeys are killed each year. That’s about how many baseball players have died in baseball’s entire professional history.
  • Bulgaria was the only soccer team in the 1994 World Cup in which all 11 players’ last names ended with the letters “OV.”
  • Gene Sarazen, a golfer from several generations ago, set the record for the fastest golf drive: 120 mph.
  • Michael Sangster, who played in the 1960s, had tennis’ fastest serve, once clocked at 154 mph.
  • In 1964 for the 10th time in his major-league baseball career, Mickey Mantle hit home runs from both the left and ride sides of the plate in the same game – setting a new baseball record.
  • Since 1896, the beginning of the modern Olympics, only Greece and Australia have participated in every Games.
  • Australian Rules football was originally designed to give cricketers something to play during the off season.
  • Baseball cards have been around since 1886. Modern cards, with high-resolution color photographs on the front and player statistics on the back, date from 1953. The photos are taken in the spring, with and without team caps, just in case the player is traded to another team.

It’s all about Wine Trivia This Week…

wineIt’s another fantastic week with summer and warm sunny days on our heels. Greeley Avenue Bar and Grill offers a great reprieve after a day of hiking, weekend of camping or any other fun in the sun. And, as we approach some hot days you don’t have to go to the grocery store to cool off. Come on in, grab a cold beer, watch a game and cool off.

I hope everyone enjoyed the post about Roy Smallwood, and don’t forget to visit his Facebook page and blog. If you missed it, then be sure to go back and read it.

Here are some interesting facts about wine for you this week:

  • “Vinifera” actually means: grape varietals originating from Europe. The species covers thousands of different varieties including most of the best known like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. Grapes such as Concord, Niagara and Catawba, are classified as “native” grapes.
  • Why would you use an oak barrel in wine making?
  • Oak does wonders for wine because it has a tendency to pull the tannins, acid, and alcohol into a perfect balance. Oak adds another dimension to the bouquet and flavor; it increases the acidity, lowers the pH, releases tannins and adds to the overall complexity. Hints of caramel, coconut, vanilla, roasted nuts are characteristics that can be found in oaked wine.
  • If newer oak barrels were used in the wine making process, the wines will often have a hint of vanilla in both the aroma and flavor.
  • The corkscrew was designed in the mid 1800’s.
  • There are approximately 85 calories per 4 ounces of wine.
  • California produces more than 17 million gallons of wine each year.
  • There are approximately 60 gallons of wine per barrel.
  • 400 grapevines make up one acre.
  • The Mesopotamians are credited the producing the first wines in 6000 B.C.

Have a great week and we’ll see ya there!
