Greeley Grindhouse Presents…

Abbott and Costello

It’s October which means that it’s the month for tricks, treats and things that go bump in the night. It’s also time for Greeley Grindhouse! This month Mac Bell hosts an old school film “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein”! Mac will introduce the film with stories shared by Chris Costello, Lou’s youngest daughter. The best Lou Costello scared impression gets a slap on the back!

When does this evening of fun begin you ask? Tuesday, October 29th at 7:20 PM. Greeley is showing the film on Tuesday due to NFL football scheduled games on Thursday, so make sure you note the change on your calendar.

This 1948 American horror comedy film, directed by Charles Barton, stars the comedy team of Abbott and Costello. It’s the first of several films where the comedy duo meets classic characters from Universal‘s horror film group. In this film, they encounter Count DraculaFrankenstein’s monster and the Wolf Man.

Abbott and Costello’s continual run in with monsters became so popular they made a TV special in the early 50s. The duo did a sketch where they interacted with the latest original Universal Studios monster at the time, the Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954).

Years later, in 2001, the United States Library of Congress deemed this film “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. In September 2007, Readers Digest selected the movie as one of the top 100 funniest films of all time. The film is recognized by historians as the definitive end point to the American golden age of the monster mash.

Greeley Grindhouse Presents…

DeathstalkerposterGreeley Grindhouse presents “Deathstalker” Thursday, August 15th, beginning at 8:00 p.m. You’ll enjoy this Conan rip off that offers sorcery and sword fights!

What’s this grindhouse movie about? A witch sends the  warrior, Deathstalker, on a quest to find a chalice, an amulet, and a sword, two of which are held by the wicked sorcerer Munkar, played by Bernard Erhard. Deathstalker finds the sword easily and sets out to Munkar’s castle.

On his journey, Deathstalker meets a warrior named Ogrhis (Richard Brooker) who informs him of a tournament. Munkar has invited warriors to participate in contests until only one is left standing. And what does the winner get? Munkar’s kingdom. Along the way to the tournament, the pair meet Kaira, a female warrior (Lana Clarkson) who agrees to accompany them on their journey.

Arriving at Munkar’s castle, Deathstalker and the other warriors are invited to get drunk and rape Munkar’s harem slaves, including Princess Codille (Barbi Benton). Deathstalker isn’t to excited about the proposition and instead rescues Princess Codille. But, only briefly as Munkar takes her back.

The tournament continues for several days and Deathstalker searches for the other two artifacts at night. By then, almost all the other contestants have killed each other, and Deathstalker faces Munkar for the battle that will truly test their skills.

The film is noteworthy for launching the career of Lana Clarkson. Clarkson went on to work with executive producer Roger Corman on the films Barbarian Queen and Barbarian Queen II: The Empress Strikes Back. She also guest starred in an episode of the television show Black Scorpion.

Greeley Avenue Bar and Grill Gives Back

One of the continual things that sets Greeley Avenue Bar & Grill apart from the rest is their continual involvement with the community.

Last year Jon and Rainer hosted an event at Greeley Avenue Bar & Grill called “Chief Joseph Parents and Friends Night Out”.  And, not only did they host this fun-filled evening, but they donated fifty percent of the night’s proceeds to the PTA. What did this mean exactly? Chief Joseph Elementary raised funds to hire additional staff.

This year Greeley Avenue Bar & Grill is working with Paula Harkin and the event “Pints to Paska 10K”. Paula gave the bar a shout out on Facebook saying ” Our thanks to Greeley Ave Bar & Grill for allowing Pints to Paskta 10K to stage at their location. We appreciate your community involvement and support.”

Football Season Around the Corner at Greeley Avenue

DucksWelcome to the last weekend in July 2013! This year is more than halfway through, and the excitement of the NFL is brewing in the air. Training camp started in June for the rookies, and the first preseason game Hall of Fame game is Sunday, August 4th between Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins!

Of course fans weren’t short on news surrounding the NFL this summer when Aaron Hernandez found himself arrested for murder. The former New England’s Patriot star is also under investigation for two more murder charges. The drama just keeps coming.

One of our college football teams also made the news. The NCAA in late June placed Oregon’s football program on probation for three years and took away a pair of scholarships for recruiting violations during Chip Kelly’s watch. The disciplinary action does not include a bowl ban though.

With Chip Kelly gone everyone is eager to see if Mark Helfrich has what it takes to keep Oregon in the Top 5 long term. With De’Anthony Thomas and Marcus Mariota returning, the Ducks offense should rock once again. Let the games begin!

Greeley Avenue offers these beers on the rotating taps. These change once the last drop drains from the keg so hurry in if these are your faves:

  1. West Coast IPA from Green Flash Brewing
  2. Hop Czar from Bridgeport Brewing
  3. HUB’s Secession CDA

Brewed right here in beautiful Portland, Oregon, the Hop Czar from Bridgeport Brewing pours a dark orange, caramel and amber. The head consists of clear color with a khaki white head. The smell contains a grassy hops up front with a bit of resin, floral and spruce as well as honey and caramel malts. This beer offers a light-to-medium body, creamy texture, average carbonation with an abrupt, bitter finish. It offers an ABV of 7.50 %

Have a great week everyone, and we’ll see ya there!

The Giant Spider Invasion Playing at Greeley Grindhouse

GiantspiderinvasionIf there’s a favorite time at Greeley Avenue Bar & Grill it’s during Quizzies and the Greeley Grindhouse.

Quizzies continues the fun each Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. with Roy’s great sense of humor and trivia questions. So team on up, use your help line (the Greeley Bar & Grill staff) and win the game!

Greeley Grindhouse will show “The Giant Spider Invasion” on Thursday, July 18th at 8:00 PM. This creepy crawly movie will keep you on your toes as spiders invade.

This low-budget 1975 film focuses on giant spiders that terrorize the town of Merrill, Wisconsin and the surrounding area. Starring Alan Hale Jr. (The Skipper from Gilligan’s Island), this movie revolves around a  spider invasion which occurs when what appears to be a meteorite crashes down in rural Wisconsin. It then spawns spiders of different sizes. The invasion, the result of an inter-dimensional gateway, is thwarted when Dr. Vance and Dr. Langer struggle, but manage to close off the gateway. This drains the spiders of their energy and causes them to melt into puddles of disgusting sludge.

The iconic theatrical poster art was a throwback to the giant monster movies of the 1950’s. The film received a considerable run and became one of the fifty top grossing films of that year. After a three-time ABC television network run, the movie achieved additional exposure several years later when it was featured in a 1997 episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K). It’s now regarded as a cult classic in the B film realm.

Mark your calendars and join Greeley and the movie mogul, Mac Bell, as he entertains everyone with Smack TV once again.

Have a great week, and we’ll see ya there!
